SOLE is a catalogue that documents a collection of the soles of various footwear. Drawing from the collection’s visual complexity, SOLE guides readers through the unique shapes and textures found beneath our feet.
In general, the shape of soles from sneakers, boots, or high heels are universal so these collect objects are what many would recognize. A sole can also come in different shapes and sizes while maintaining an identifiable form. The prominent variances in soles are found in their designs.
The collection consists of forty different shoes, providing forty different soles. To fully perceive the similarities and differences in their forms, I use three methods of documentation: photography, scanning, and conté rubbing. This initial process generated 120 documentations.
The forms of the soles incorporated patterns, curves/swirls, or geometric shapes. From the variances in imprints and construction among the specimens, I generated the following adjectives to guide me in designing the catalogue: dynamic, unique, mechanical, attractive, and decorative.
SOLE is a 30-page catalogue featuring digitally manipulated graphics to highlight the beauty of the soles, which are commonly out of sight.
